Zytronic explores south-east Asia expansion
By Chris Tighe

Zytronic, the Tyneside-based touch sensor specialist, said it was exploring the potential of expansion into Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia as it reported rising demand for its products.
Zytronic full-year results to 30 September 2011
Sales Pre-tax profit Earnings per share Dividend
£20.5m £3.6m 18.3p 5.6p
↑ 11% ↑ 22% ↑ 23% ↑ 12%
The company, which exports 92 per cent of its output, has also strengthened its research and development team to step up work on its sensors’ electronics and software.

As well as long-established use in rugged outdoor applications such as ATMs, where it supplies two of the three biggest manufacturers, Zytronic’s products are being increasingly used in sectors such as self-service, vending and industrial automation.
Among the applications which drove growth in the year to September 30 were sales to Coca-Cola for its Freestyle drinks fountain and to Gaggenau for a new induction cooktop.
Touch sensor sales in the 12 months rose by 38 per cent to £14.2m ($22.3m) and accounted for 70 per cent of total group revenue, up from 56 per cent the previous year. But orders for non-touch products fell and the company is simplifying the design so that it can continue to make these products profitably while meeting customers’ needs.
Pre-tax profit rose 22 per cent to £3.6m, while earnings per share rose 23 per cent to 18.3p on sales up 11 per cent to £20.5m.
The proposed final dividend is 5.6p, giving a 10 per cent increase for the year to 7.7p.
Brewin Dolphin, house broker, raised its current year pre-tax profit forecast to £3.8m from £3.7m. The shares closed down 1.5p at 223.5p.

Zytronic – touch the futureLONG-TERM BUY

With a wide variety of applications in everything from gambling to the vending machines of the future, touch sensor manufacturer Zytronic holds some exciting growth prospects, reports Ben Jaglom

Though the country is currently experiencing a number of challenges that range in nature from cutbacks in the public sector to relatively high inflation, there are a number of British companies bucking the trend. Prominent among these is Zytronic, a Blaydon-on-Tyne-based firm that specialises in the production of touch sensors and optical filters for electronic displays currently benefiting from an increasing demand for its products from a range of big-name customers and leading the way into the future with its innovative technology.

Its wares are used in everything from cash points to gaming machines, in industries that include the military, telecommunications and medicine. In addition, while a number of British businesses are outsourcing their work to China and the Far East, Zytronic carries out most of its work at its factories in the UK, where its range of drilling, heating, cutting and polishing equipment is able to manufacture a variety of its devices.

An AIM veteran, Zytronic has been on the junior market since 2000, while the company has been in the optical glass laminating industry for over 30 years, having made a number of filters and electronic displays with uses including the facial visors used by the police, glass panels and the optical displays used in cash points. Since 2000 the company has manufactured a range of touch sensor products, providing what it calls a ‘blend of high durability and environmental stability’ together with the ability to ‘customise the product for shape and size thickness.’

Today the company is focused on selling to a range of customers, and is perhaps best known for its work in developing much of the technology behind Coca-Cola’s new range of interactive vending machines, named ‘Freestyle’.

Strategy
For several years now, Zytronic has focused on the touch sensor side of its business, which boasts that it offers a unique form of technology, which it calls ‘projected capacitive technology’, or PCT. The company argues that this technology enables it to produce touch sensors that have higher levels of toughness and clarity beyond what was previously attainable.

Its range of touch sensors have a set of similar-sounding names and include ZYTOUCH, ZYBRID, ZYPOS, ZYBRIDFILM, ZYPROFILM and ZYSWITCH. While it boasts that all of its products are both ‘dependable’ and ‘low maintenance’, they are used in a variety of different functions and applications. ZYFILM is a transparent touch panel for use in front of an LCD, while ZYPROFILM does not require an LCD and can be used in systems up to 82 inches across. The two products are typically used in applications such as retail, advertising and exhibitions for signage and information systems.

Meanwhile, its ZYPOS and ZYBRID sensors both boast of providing protection against ‘physical, mechanical and chemical abuse’, with both the sensors used in the gaming, point-of-sale (POS) and in-car equipment sectors. ZYTOUCH is its most resilient sensor, providing ‘unrivalled protection against a wide range of physical threats’.

The company has focused on the touch sensor side of its business due to the variety of industries in which touch sensors can be used: medical devices, gaming and banking, among others. As Mark Cambridge enthuses, ‘The strategy for some time has been to focus on continual growth in the touch screen sector and, as a result, in our latest results 66 per cent of turnover came from this division.’

One area in which the company has attracted the attention of investors is in its work for Coca-Cola’s ‘Freestyle’ vending machines. The machines, which Coca-Cola plans to roll ou By SpikeyDT

Zytronic (ZYT) [219p/£32.21 million]

The AIM-listed specialist manufacturer of internationally award-winning touch sensor products announced interim results for the six months to 31 March 2011. Positive results were recorded, with an 11% growth in revenue to £9.1 million (2010: £8.2 million) and a 19% increase in profit before tax to £1.3 million (2010: £1.1 million).

Other significant events during the period include the appointment of a new chairman, Tudor Davies, and a growth in sales of the group's touch sensor products, which now represent 66% (2010: 56%) of total revenues.

Zytronic's leading touch sensor products are based upon its unique projected capacitive technology (PCT), which is similar to the technologies used on the iPhone, but PCT provides better durability and stability and works better on large screens (minimum 6" screen).

Applications of this technology takes a variety of forms, and in particular the period has seen growth in the supply of touch sensors for Coca Cola Freestyle™ vending machines, to Bosch und Siemens Hausgerate for its new Gaggenau induction cook top, and increased supply for digital signage applications and the gaming/entertainment market.

Wider geographical spread of sales is also being achieved, partly due to an increase in sales via value added resellers (from 27% to 35%).

With increasing acceptance of touch sensors across an expanding number of geographic regions and applications, the company believes this will provide a good platform for continuing growth and shareholder value. By SpikeyDT

Touch sensor demand boosts Zytronic profits

By Chris Tighe

Published: May 11 2011 22:57 | Last updated: May 11 2011 22:57

Growth in demand for Coca Cola vending machines and Bosch and Siemens Gaggenau induction cooktops and a rebound in the gaming market helped Zytronic to an 11 per cent increase in revenues and 19 per cent rise in pre-tax profit in the six months to March 31.

The Aim-listed manufacturer said touch sensors accounted in the first half for 66 per cent of sales, up from 56 per cent last time. Touch sensor orders in the six-month period rose by 36 per cent and sales grew by 29 per cent. In the ATM market, sales of Zytronic’s lower growth electronic display products reduced by 18 per cent. This drop had been expected, it said, as 2010 had shown particularly strong growth due to the expansion of the so-called Bric economies.

In recent years Zytronic, which exports 89 per cent of its Tyneside-made products worldwide, has focused its development strategy on its Zygos and Zybrid touch sensors, diversifying away from electronic display products. Its products are generally suitable for outdoor and high-use environments including ATMs, self-service and vending machines and ticketing machines.

Revenues rose to £9.1m (£8.2m), pre-tax profit increased to £1.3m (£1.1m) and earnings per share were up 19 per cent to 6.4p (5.4p). The interim dividend rose 5 per cent to 2.1p a share (2p).

During the first half Tudor Davies succeeded David Banks as non-executive chairman and John Kennair, company founder, retired as a non-exec.

Mark Cambridge, chief executive, said the outlook for the second half was very positive. House brokers Brewin Dolphin are forecasting full year pre-tax profit of £3.2m (£2.9m) on revenues of £20m (£18.5m).

20:29 28/04/2011 Zytronic Demonstrates Its Versatile Portfolio of Projected Capacitive Touch Sensing Solutions
Innovative touch sensor manufacturer Zytronic will use the upcoming Society for Information Display (SID) Display Week exhibition, held in Los Angeles from 15th to 20th May, to showcase its latest product developments.

Visitors to the Zytronic booth will be able to see the company's latest industrial and public use touchscreen solutions in action. These will include a collection of four displays with ZYBRID®/ZYPOS® touch sensors applied, each one demonstrating a different capability of the company's proprietary Projected Capacitive Technology (PCTTM): its powerful through-glass performance; its ability to be combined with a variety of materials (such as mirrored glass) to enable the creation of truly unique interactive surfaces; the capability of the new ZXY100 controller to define multiple interactive zones on a single screen, such as a keyboard, short-cut buttons and a dynamic drag-and-drop area; and the possibility of optical bonding a PCT sensor to a display to improve the readability both off-axis and in strong sunlight (permitting use in even the most extreme of outdoor settings).

A 50-inch (127cm) ZYPROFILM® touch sensor on a flexible substrate with a 128-channel ZXY100 touch controller will also be featured demonstrating the scalability of the technology. This sensor can be rolled up for transportation purposes then mounted quickly and easily on to the rear of a rigid transparent surface (such as a shop front window). It can be applied to curved surfaces as well as flat ones, allowing utilization in a greater breadth of possible applications. The high performance touch controller offers high level accuracy and responsiveness, as well as having the capacity to support dual touch operation and gesture recognition, thereby enhancing the user experience.

Also on stand there will be an oval, screen printed 26-inch (660.4 mm) ZYBRID touchscreen with a 64-channel version of the ZXY100 controller providing an example of both the degree of sensor customization possible and the improved speed, accuracy and dual touch capability of the latest controller.

Notably, Zytronic will also use the event to debut its new PCT touch sensor solution based on Indium-Tin-Oxide (ITO) technology. Available for higher volume, small size applications such as industrial grade telematics systems, ruggedized handheld devices and home appliances incorporating touch, this new generation sensor will augment Zytronic's existing product line-up and will provide customers with even greater flexibility when developing higher volume applications.

12:10 17/04/2011 Bicycle Rental kiosks
Bicycle rental kiosks in London are using Zytronic's Projected Capacitive Technology (PCT) to protect touchscreens from bad weather and threat of vandalism, according to a company press release.

The Public Bike System Company's BIXI units use a specially designed 12.8-inch version of Zytronic's ZYBRID customizable touch sensor with a protective overlay of 6mm thick glass.

The sensor is used in conjunction with the company's new high-performance touch controller, which speeds up touch response, improves accuracy and enhances the through-glass performance, maintaining the touchscreen's functionality, according to a press release, which also quoted Christian Vermette, operation vice president of Public Bike System Company.

"We have been greatly impressed with the PCT-based sensors from Zytronic, as well as the high level of support provided by its engineer team," Vermette said. "This has allowed us to have total confidence that the BIXI renting stations we have deployed will remain in action with minimal requirements for continued repair or maintenance."

The BIXI System has deployments in Melbourne, Washington/Arlington, Montreal and Minneapolis. The first phase of the London project, which is already underway, will make more than 6,000 bikes available to cyclists throughout the metropolitan area.

According to the press release, since the kiosks are usually outside, their touchscreens must be weather-resistant and vandal-proof in order to ensure reliable operation in all conditions. Therefore, each PCT sensor is embedded into a laminated glass substrate, which in extreme applications can be placed behind an additional thick overlay of glass or polycarbonate. This makes the sensor capable of use in areas where more commonplace resistive or surface capacitive touch technologies are incapable of use.

Furthermore, in contrast to most optical or acoustic touch sensing mechanisms, PCT can be designed without need for a bezel or frame and can be implemented in attractive smooth-fronted industrial designs popularized as a result of the iPad and other consumer products.

The chairman of this company in his role as chairmain of ROMAG has shown himself to be a man who has no respect for company law and his prime respomsibility of generating shareholder growth and has destroyed 100% of the share holder value.

Accordingly I would be very wary as to the true value of you holdings here and if there is any weakness in the share price...as there has been suspect that the smoke means there is a big old fire going on!!

Thanks for posting that, Techno. I got there by searching:

"Touchscreen copes with coal dust"

(including the quotes).

BTW I've come across a rumour that Apple is going to be short of touchscreens, possibly starting because some American commentator said an Apple screen felt like a Japanese one. Even if it's true I suppose it's also possible they'll be short of other things and so will competitors.

Zytronics (ZYT, 229p, £33.69m) has announced the use of its innovative touch screen in Microsoft’s Envisioning Lab. The use of Zytronics’ Projected Capacitive Technology (PCT) enabled the creation of an immersive touch-screen using 10 independent but linkable displays for engineers to experiment and develop with new ideas. PCT is set for a huge surge in potential markets size thanks to the introduction and increasing popularity of e-readers (Amazon’s Kindle), the launch and popularity of touch enabled pad computers (iPad and all the competitors launching based on Microsoft as well), the introduction of tablet phones (Samsung Tab) and the fat approaching use of flexible plastic displays which PCT can enable on complex surface shapes. As a result we upgrade from a Hold to a Buy with a 256p price target based on 16p EPS expectations.
