| ITSNOLIFE I dont know if you are familiar with the Ekofisk field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea but the below description of its size and the amount of money it has contributed to the Norwegian economy is worthy of note. When Ekofisk is mentioned in the media and in public, it is often in a historical perspective: the field that transformed Norway into an oil nation, one of the 10 biggest offshore oil fields in the world, has created some NOK 1 260 billion (2004 value) in value so far, and has produced almost 20 percent of Norways total oil and gas production in the same period, If you then go on to read the history of the early stage drilling in this field youll see that failure on the first, even second, third and fourth drills is not indication of future potential.
Three rigs were operating in the Norwegian sector in the autumn of 1969. Gas had been found in the British sector, but nothing had turned up in the Norwegian sector. Hope was running out. In 1966, the Ocean Viking semisubmersible drilling rig was built and equipped at Aker Mekaniske Verksted in Oslo, a predecessor of Aker Solutions. She drilled her first well (16/11-1) for Phillips in the North Sea 14 July 1967. The well was dry. More wells were drilled, some dry and some with a more positive response. At 21 August 1969, Phillips started drilling at block 2/4 using the Ocean Viking. The bit soon penetrated a shallow gas pocket. Oil and gas gushed up with the mud. In order to avoid a blowout, the well was completely cemented. The rig was moved one kilometre, and once again at 25 October, the drill bit penetrated an oil reservoir. Bad weather made the testing difficult. In November, the rig had to be pulled out, and most of the crew had to be evacuated. But later that month, there was a news flash from Phillips: Weve made a discovery! Several more wells were drilled, and more messages of success came back to headquarters. On 7 December, the testing could continue. There was growing belief that the discovery was commercial, and this was confirmed by the Norwegian authorities on Christmas Eve 1969. The discovery was called Ekofisk. It was not only the first discovery in the Norwegian sector, but it would also prove to be the largest oil and gas discovery in the history of the North Sea, with a production lifespan of several decades. One of the worlds elephant fields had been discovered. If you are going to invest in early stage oil exploration you need to try and understand the way the industry works a little bit better. What constitutes a failed drill in your eyes may simply be a stepping stone to future success. Chariots dry hole may simply provide the data they need to go on and find the sweet spot. Early stage oillies are very risky, theres no getting away from that but in the same way that one swallow does not a summer make so one dry hole does not constitute failure. Patience and nerves of steel are required. DYOR TDT |

| 18:57 14/05/2012 | Re: Chariot results |
| Doesn't really affect us. Think about it, somebody drilling 400 - 500 miles away! There are umpteen examples of the drill bit hitting nothing only for another drill a couple of miles away to hit the spot big time. You can even find examples of drills either going to deep or not deep enough only for subsequent drills years later discovering oil at the right depth. CHAR had one target on their drill Tower will have 5. That makes the odds slightly better. Tower's drill is still very risky despite the five targets and there are no guarantees in this game. It all depends on your appetite for risk I guess. DYOR TDT |
