Electronic components specialist Solid State (SSP) has picked up well-established rival Blazepoint from the administrators for £200,000 in cash.

The Oxford based business was founded 25 years ago, however it had struggled due to cash flow problems. Blazepoint supplies ruggedized computer and hand-held devices to commercial and military markets worldwide, with a particular expertise in transforming exisitng products to cope in more extreme situations.

In the year to June, it achieved sales of £3.1m and pre-tax profits of £25,000. Solid is also picking up a 30 strong workforce, as well as a chunky asset base - the book value of which is £819,000. Integration costs will chip £100,000 off 2011 numbers, however due to the higher margin nature of its work, next year it will go up by £150,000.

Speaking to Growth Company Investor, chief executive Gary Marsh said 'the deal establishes Solid State as the UK market leader, in addition it brings a great portfolio of products.' Trading from a 16,000 square feet facility, the move will bring useful spare capacity, as well as good cross-selling opportunities, with access to markets such as transportation.

A recent trading update confirmed trading is significantly ahead of the comparative period, moreover, since March it has expanded its order book by 14% to a record £9.6m. Broker WH Ireland has upped its 2013 forecasts to a pre-tax profit of £1.6m and EPS of 18.1p. We urged readers to buy the shares at 104.5p in July, so the increase since then to 115p is reassuring. With current trading good, interim results on 12 December should confirm its progress. Buy.

Excellent IMS today.

The house broker was forecasting an eps of 15.25p & a divi of 6.5p for FY12. It looks as if these are going to be beaten.

What is a fast growth company like SSP doing on a forward P/E of 7 & a yield of 6%. I'm adding slowly & expect to see 200p+ by the end of 2012. By Stephen Maturin

In what is its 40th trading year, electronic components specialist Solid State (SSP) has not disappointed with news of a record trading result.

Our recent advice to buy the shares in the July issue of Growth Company Investor has proved well timed, as the price has ticked up from 104.5p to 124p. Strong trading across all divisions helped boost sales 57% to £21.2m in the year to March as pre-tax profits rocketed 135% to £1.2m.

The figures were ahead of our suggested profit line of £1m, there is also the welcome sight of a doubled total dividend of 6p a share - proof of its intent to reward investors.

Solid State Supplies is a distributor of electrical components such as semiconductors, with the completion of its restructuring efforts it has enjoyed year-on-year bookings up 46%. It has returned to a sustainable profit, and hopes to benefit from the extension of its contract with US giant Microsemi to sell products.

Rugged Systems is the leading supplier of rugged mobile computing and has benefited from the relocation of its business. Battery packs arm Steatite has stocked up on kit following the tragic events in Japan, and has also relocated to a new site in Redditch.

Chief executive Gary Marsh says 'over the last five months our order intake has exceeded our shipping', this is a positive sign and with a record order book of just under £9m the outlook is good. Recently appointed broker WH Ireland expects 2012 pre-tax profits of £1.34m and EPS of 15.3p (slightly down due to a higher number of shares in issue). Solid State is in talks to secure new business and is also on the lookout for further acquisitions. Buy.

I think the sp could have done more in light of the results. Or could this be a slow burn?

7:31 27/07/2011 Brilliant Results
EPS of 15.7p & loads of growth to come this year.

We should now be put on similar multiples to ECM, PFL, ACL & other electronic component disties.

Even if we only get awarded a P/E of 12 in the near future we can still look forward to an sp of 180p+ after the Interims in late December.

Good to see some strength in the SSP price, especially in the context of sharp sp falls in ECM & PFL.

Prelims are due around 29th July & I'm expecting good news. By MelchiorHoffman
