| 6:01 19/05/2013 | Emerging Markets Leading Indicator? |
| [Cisco is a leading provider of digital networking technology. Most of the internet works across Cisco devices. Cisco is one of the 30 companies that make up the DOW Jones Index] I saw an interview with Cisco's CEO just after they posted their strong results a couple of days ago. I made notes as it went along because the CEO reckons that Cisco's order book is a leading market indicator by around 'two to four quarters'. He claims that through their order book, they saw the financial crisis coming in Aug 2007, for example, which is about 6 months (or "two quarters") before the crash happened. The CEO said Cisco growth in emerging markets was running at 13% across the board, compared to 6% just one quarter ago. He then ran through individual figures for each market which I have put in a table below. I have inserted the US, which was broken down into sub-categories but all were low double figures except the public sector which was 5%.so I have guessed what the US would be roughly from his figures. European and Japan growth figures were conspicuous by their absence. Cisco's Order Book Growth by Region: India 29% Brazil 16 % Russia 14% USA 10-12% China 8% Mexico 4% The "next fifteen" [emerging markets] all at 13% (unfortunately these were unspecified in the interview and the results release as far as I can see. I haven't yet listened to the confrence call). You can see the interview for yourselves here if you are interested: http://www.cnbc.com/id/100742794 By Eadwig |

| Warlock Williams, I know you prefer to look at the markets through the prism of Fx and that is fine, and trading Fx is a tried and tested way of making money over many, many years. I know nothing about it frankly, but even I have gained plenty over the years by holding Euros and USD in different accounts and only exchanging into GBP when the rates were favourable (fine if you are fortunate enough to be have the cash flow to able to retain earnings, sometimes for years). I also have no interest or any real understanding of bonds. So I will just point out one thing for you to consider. In your response the word 'traditionally' is used several times, not least, probably, because Japan is about as traditional as you get in its own way, which is why it has doggedly persued the same failing policies for the last 20 years. However, these are NOT traditional times, so much so even Japan has admitted its mistakes and changed tack - in fact they're on a reciprocal heading all of a sudden. So, for your sake, I do hope that your 'traditional logic' still holds up in such times. I am really not qualified to pass comment, let alone judgement. I'm just a simple stock picker. I look at what trends I think will play out over a number of years, I look at the sectors I think will benefit, and I choose companies/stocks from within those sectors that seem reasonably priced, well managed and have good fundamentals and forward earnings projections and recently i have had some startlingly good results - or to put it another way, many of those stocks I have picked which have come good, have come good more quickly and to a greater extent than I could ever have imagined. Admittedly we have been coming from very low levels and stocks have been priced very cheaply for their earnings compared to the past (many sectors still are). QE has contributed to the quick rises, I have no doubt, enticing people into the markets because traditional havens like bonds are just not giving the returns required. yet volumes are still low when measured against '06/07 levels - so I'm not sure where that leaves your liquidity argument. The bottom line for me is that as far as Yen/USD goes, it is only of concern if the company I am interested in is Japanese or up against Japanese competition or exporting a lot of its product to Japan. That and I moved into a Japanese growth fund as soon as the BoJ changed direction - which is doing very well. Good luck with your approach. By Eadwig |

| Saddos. You should have been watching Gordon Gekko and listening to the ace music from Talking Heads in the movie instead of wasting time gawping at that Euro freak show and making your ears bleed. IMHO, SBK By Sir Buns-Up Knealing |
